It’s certainly not out of left field for the first international act to grace the Ladybug Festival stage to be someone who refuses to be pinned down, someone who bucks the modern trend of being distilled ever-so-tiny into one microscopic sub-genre or another. Hailing from the Great White North of Ottawa, Canada, with roots IN the blues—both heavy and acoustic—and a sound honed through years of recording and touring in garage and pop punk bands, CATRIONA STURTON (vocals, guitars, harmonica) will fit in just right around here. Her DIY aesthetic has certainly helped her pay her dues, and she crafts and exhibits her music with a raw energy and fearless ability that both belie and attest to her youthful wisdom. Taking the stage with the confidence of (and not a coincidental similarity to) fellow countryman Neil Young, Sturton is able to rouse a crowd off their feet with a grungey 4/4 singalong, and convey the maudlin excesses of our daily lives through a straight up blues and harp number that frankly wouldn’t sound out of place in rural Mississippi in the 1930’s. Whether belting out odes to comic book heroes or relating the journey of discovering a new love to the experience of playing on a gameshow, her lyrics hit home in the most intimate of ways. Don’t miss what is sure to be a spectacular performance on Night One of The Ladybug Festival!
