About the Performers

Crystal Baynard Norman is a Wilmington-based multidisciplinary artist, author, poet, and animator. Known as a Senior Pro Artist and “DaPoet,” she creates work centered on resilience, activism, and cultural truth. As a prolific author of eight titles, including MS (My Story: I’ve Lived It) and He Was Banned But Now He’s a Brand, Crystal also developed “AfroBets,” a proprietary symbolic decoding system. With over 20 years of experience as an educator, she continues to bridge generational gaps through her creative brand, Poetry Babee, using art and digital animation to mentor and inspire.

Narubi Selah is a dynamic voice in contemporary cultural expression, weaving together spoken word, ancestral wisdom, and soulful performance to inspire, awaken, and connect community. As an artist, Narubi Selah self identifies as a conscious rapper and does not hesitate to bring a commanding, raw, keep it real yet nurturing presence to the stage. She invites audiences into a shared space of blended poetic storytelling, with themes ranging from pop culture to liberation. Her performances often explore the intersections of history, femininity, and sacred expression, offering both a grounding in heritage and a vision for collective elevation. Her voice will contribute to an evening dedicated to culture, resilience, and the ongoing journey of freedom.

PaPe Dembe: Senegalese master hand drummer PaPe Dembe “Paco” Samb, born in Dakar in 1976, is an internationally acclaimed musician from a distinguished griot family, the ancestral keepers of Wolof history, stories, and music for centuries. Before his 2013 arrival in the U.S., initially with the Dinkendo Family Band, Paco performed with numerous major Senegalese and Gambian artists and his own group Super Ngewel. Since settling in Delaware, he has enriched the local music scene, collaborating with artists like Fatoumata Diawara and Kulu Mele. His 2014 U.S. solo album with Super Ngewel showcases his mastery of both traditional and contemporary Senegalese music.
VirtuoSoul: Established in 1997, VirtuoSoul is a dynamic R&B band hailing from the heart of the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia). Fusing soulful vocals, jazz sophistication, contemporary R&B, funk grooves, and neo-soul energy, VirtuoSoul delivers an unforgettable live music experience that moves both heart and feet. Led by founder and drummer extraordinaire Cory Brown, the group has graced iconic stages including Hard Rock Casino, The Carlyle Club, and The Baltimore Comedy Factory. With the sultry vocals of Renesha and a tight ensemble of seasoned musicians, VirtuoSoul masterfully blends classics from artists like Chaka Khan, Jill Scott, Maxwell, and Cameo, while adding their own distinct flair.
John Carr: Born and raised in Chester, Pennsylvania, John Carr, also known as ‘The Soldier Of Love,’ is a passionate force in the arts community, equally committed to performance and teaching. His early foray into songwriting at age nine blossomed into a deep love for singing music that resonates with the soul. A devoted fan of the legendary Marvin Gaye, John finds immense joy in bringing Gaye’s iconic sound to audiences across the country. His musical journey has included collaborations with renowned R&B artists like The Delfonics and Alfie Pollitt. John humbly acknowledges the divine source of his talent and expresses heartfelt thanks for his creative gifts, joyful demeanor, and captivating stage presence, believing his artistic path is divinely guided.
Cemanahuac Cenyelistli: An Aztec dance and cultural group based in Wilmington, Delaware, dedicated to the preservation and practice of indigenous Nahua traditions. The group’s name, derived from Nahuatl, roughly translates to “Global Family” or “Universal Family,” reflecting their mission of community and shared heritage.
