In addition to a reading of “Declaration of Independence,” this event centers how Black women used the energized language and legacy of the American Revolution to defy, define, and build two movements, as they lived under surveillance and developed self-affirming identities. Experience a rare performance of Olivier Messian’s "Quartet for the End of Time" performed by the Pyxis Piano Trio with J.C. Barker, Clarinet. Written and performed while the composer was a prisoner of war during World War II, it was inspired by the Book of Revelation. Through moments of stillness, joy, and prophetic intensity, Messiaen reflects on Christ’s eternal love and the promise of life beyond suffering.
