Description

Join the Quaker Hill Historic Preservation Foundation for a special luncheon celebrating community, history, and the remarkable legacy of Thomas Garrett.

The event will feature the unveiling of a wayside panel and bronze plaque commemorating Thomas Garrett’s achievements and his heroic contributions to the Underground Railroad in Quaker Hill.

Quaker Hill Historic Preservation Foundation annually celebrates the memory of our great Underground Railroad stationmaster Thomas Garrett with a special event in his honor.  This year will be extra special as we are combining a luncheon with the unveiling by Mayor Carney of a descriptive wayside panel to be placed at the corner of Fourth and N. Shipley Streets and a bronze plaque on the building now occupying Garrett’s homesite, both on the campus of Delaware Technical Community College’s Wilmington campus.  In addition, the 200 and 300 blocks of N. Shipley will be proclaimed as “Thomas Garrett Way”.  There will be a talk by Rev. Dr. Lawrence Livingston and a presentation of our “Bob” Seeley Award to a person who has contributed significantly to the memory of Thomas Garrett.  Seeley is a descendant of Thomas Garrett.  This year’s award will be presented to Linda McDonald, another descendant of Garrett, who has contributed greatly to our foundation and Delaware history.

This luncheon is OUR MAJOR fundraiser to support our educational programs and free events, including programs largely geared towards children.
