Description
Explore a variety of STEM topics and come up with solutions to engineering challenges together as a family. In four hands-on workshops you can learn about alternative energy and materials science, light and sound waves, chemistry and forces and motion. Each program includes a science lesson, demonstrations, and materials for completing an engineering design challenge. Student work is differentiated for age-appropriate tasks and objectives between lower (1st-3rd) and upper (4th-5th) elementary grade levels. Morning and afternoon sessions are available.
Times: 10:00-12:00 and 1:00-3:00
Grade-level: 1st-5th grade
Fee: $45/family up to 5 people
· October 1: Wind Energy and Materials Science
· Learn about energy and materials then design and test wind turbine blades using various materials to optimize energy production.
· October 15: Waves – the science behind light and sound
· Learn about the properties of light and sound waves then use that information to create two communication devices using each kind of wave to send signals over a distance.
· October 29: Chemistry – physical and chemical changes
· Explore the differences between physical and chemical changes through hands-on demonstrations then design a use for a new fabric made from fusing plastic bags.
· November 12: Mechanical Energy (forces and motion)
· Discover the principles of forces and motion then apply them by designing and testing a catapult and marble rollercoaster.
