*What’s a Tea Dance? It is a fabulous, almost-lost LGBTQ+ tradition. Before the mid-1960s, it was illegal for bars to sell alcohol to people known to be gay. Police would routinely conduct raids on establishments catering to them. To avoid this, LGBTQ people began to hold “tea dances” on Sunday afternoons at alternative venues as a way to socialize. Serving “tea” rather than alcohol made them less law-defying, and people could be home early and ready for work on Monday morning.
