Little Huxley

If you’re already a fan Huxley & Hiro’s original spot, you’ll be delighted by their playful sibling, Little Huxley, tucked into a cozy corner of the Hotel du Pont lobby.  It’s giving the same welcoming, bookish charm of “Big Hux,” but with a few irresistible extras: quirky Delaware- and regional-themed gifts and collectibles; locally-made soaps and lotions; handcrafted jewelry from area artists; and even a lifesaving stash of travel-size must-haves (think toothpaste, Advil, hand sanitizer) that have rescued me more than once. It’s part gift shop, part “if you know you know” gem — and totally worth a pop-in!

Friendly Gift Shop

This family-owned business has been in the same location in Branmar Plaza off Marsh Road since 1973, longer than any other store in this Brandywine Hundred shopping center. And its name says it all — there are all kinds of year-round and seasonal gifts for sale, which means they’re already stocked up for Christmas (and who doesn’t need a Boba Fett tree ornament?). Typical merchandise includes scented candles, picture frames, Vera Bradley handbags, carved figurines, plants, dried flowers and a wide range of Hallmark products, as well as countless other knick-knacks. As a bonus, they provide free gift-wrapping.

Oh So Molly

This boutique opened earlier this year in Trolley Square and reflects the trend-setting styles of its Gen Z owner. But it’s not just a shop for 20-somethings — the variety of looks and price points will serve any woman well. Find athleisure sets, comfy-casual outfits, cocktail party dresses and skirts, on-trend outerwear, and accessories to elevate any selection. On Instagram and TikTok, owner Molly Matlusky gives a behind-the-scenes look at what she’s stocking at 1715 North Union Street, plus where she’s heading for her next pop-up shop.

Local Record Shops

Sure, you could stream a holiday Spotify playlist this season. You could also put a fireplace screensaver on your TV and pretend everything in the house is warmer and cozier.

On the other hand, you could go out and shop for a real classic vinyl Christmas album. Something you can hold in your hands; something with artwork to admire, liner notes to peruse, and a vintage essence to absorb…

Something that actually sounds warmer and cozier.

Whether its Johnny Mathis, Bing Cosby, Elvis or Ella Fitzgerald, you are bound to find plenty of legendary holiday recordings for $10 or less at Squeezebox Records in Wilmington or at Rainbow Records in Newark. Or Goodboy Vinyl in Elsmere or Jupiter Records in North Wilmington.

And while you are shopping, you might pick up a few one-of-kind Christmas gifts for the vinyl collector in your life — and not spend a fortune!

Urban Bike Project

You can do good while doing your budget a favor by purchasing a used bike from Urban Bike Project (1500 N. Walnut St., Wilm.). The non-profit’s bike inventory is comprised of community donations, but you’d be surprised by the quality of some of their rides. Once donated, UBP’s crew does the necessary mechanical modifications to make the bike road or trail worthy and ready for a new owner looking to avoid paying thousands for a new bike. All proceeds benefit this community treasure, which is dedicated to supporting Wilmington communities by providing access to bicycling. Visit UrbanBikeProject.com.
