City Theater Co. Launches 31st Season with “Spring Awakening”

By Jeff Gudzune

City Theater Company (CTC) opened its new season with a spirited performance of Spring Awakening. Based on the 1891 play of the same name, Spring Awakening follows a group of teenagers on the cusp of adulthood in mid-19th century Germany. Teenage angst is underscored by rock- and folk-infused musical numbers in this genre-bending extravaganza.

The show’s strength is in its multi-talented company of performers and live musicians. While three characters serve as the primary focus of the narrative, there are no specific leads — the ensemble brings a unique presence to their performance, and everyone has a story to tell. The highs and lows of growing up, discovering sexual identity, moral equivocation, and the dangers of conforming to societal norms are explored. Spring Awakening is raucous and entertaining.

CTC performances are at 200 South Madison Street in Wilmington and the organization actively supports original work by regional playwrights and artists. CTC is also the home of Fearless Improv, a multi-talented group that not only entertains but offers interactive workshops to the community.
