Delaware Shakespeare is launching Beyond Shakespeare, a new series that will feature diverse creative voices in conversation with the stories and themes from Del Shakes’ 2022 full productions. Beyond Shakespeare is part of the organization’s 20th anniversary programming, its busiest and most ambitious schedule of events ever.
The Beyond Shakespeare series will begin with two play readings in April and May: A Tempest by Aimé Césaire, translated by Philip Crispin, and Hamlet: El Príncipe de Denmark by Tara Moses, with translations by Editorial Porrúa. “A Tempest” will be featured on Thursday, April 28 at 7pm at ArtzScape in Wilmington. Hamlet: El Príncipe de Denmark will be read on Thursday, May 12 at 6:30pm at Las Américas ASPIRA Academy in Newark. Tickets for both events are pay-what-you-decide.
“We certainly love the Bard at Del Shakes,” said producing artistic director David Stradley. “But there are other creative voices that can help us in exploring our shared humanity in similar ways that Shakespeare does — with poetry, imaginative theatricality, and mythic reach. As we listen to more voices, our ability to find and celebrate our connection is increased. That’s the aim of the Beyond Shakespeare series.”
The Beyond Shakespeare series will conclude in June and September with poetry slam events connected to The Tempest and Twelfth Night. Visit DelShakes.org
