Description
Brandywine Zoo is Buzzing with the excitement over their Valentine’s Day fundraiser! They need your help to name the bees in the Zoo’s hive!
Brandwyine Zoo isn’t just WAXING poetically, as pollinators, bees play a vital role in Delaware’s ecosystem and around the world. They pollinate approximately 130 agricultural crops in the US including fruit, fiber, nut, and vegetable crops. Foragers must collect nectar from about 2 million flowers to make 1 pound of honey and the average honey bee will actually make only one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime. A honey bee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour, which means it would have to fly around 90,000 miles – almost 470 times from the zoo to the furthest point south in Delaware and back again – to make one pound of honey. That’s a lot of pollination and a lot of bees to make everything work!
Brandywine Zoo’s bees need your help. As little as $5 goes a long way, but for $10 (or more), you can give their bees some names. So BEE positive!
For a donation of:
- $10: Name a bee after your Honey
- $25: Name up to three bees
- $50: Name up to seven bees*
- $100: Name up to 10 bees PLUS the names you submit will be entered into a drawing to name the Queen Bee!*
* Donors who give $50 or more can choose to receive a plush bee toy and two Zoo guest passes. A Zoo representative will contact donors with more information.
Don’t have a honey to name? They can still help!
For a $10 donation, you can also name a mealworm after your ex – many of the Zoo’s animals including the scarlet ibis, bearded dragon, and golden lion tamarins LOVE mealworms!
